Ideas on tap for Lowood Botanic Core

More than 100 residents have already shared their ideas and concerns on Somerset Regional Council’s proposed Lowood Botanic Core, as consultation continues ahead of the November 25 deadline.
The Botanic Core, part of Council’s Lowood Futures Strategy, aims to transform the town’s central park and surrounding streets into a vibrant, green community hub.
The detailed designs by AECOM Australia include a dog park, amphitheatre, pump track, learn-to-ride track, cyclist and horse rest areas, and more than 700 new trees, while preserving 94 per cent of existing ones.
Lowood Futures Strategy Advisory Committee Chair, Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt, said community consultation was going well, with some frequently asked questions being raised by residents.
“We’re so appreciative of the community’s genuine interest, support and questions around the design plans,” he said.
Among the most common questions were about parking, safety, and recreation spaces.
Cr Wendt said the central carpark will be replaced with a green, shaded public space, while new carparks are already being built or planned, adding more than 100 extra spaces overall.
Concerns about pedestrian safety are also being addressed through four new crossings and discussions with the Department of Transport and Main Roads about reducing the speed limit to 40km/h.
Residents have also suggested extra lighting, shade for the skate park, and a splash zone.
Although the latter seems unlikely with Cr Wendt noting Lowood already has a splash pad and the project aims to complement, not duplicate, existing facilities
