150 years of Caboolture history

UPPER Caboolture Uniting Church will celebrate its 150th anniversary on Sunday, November 9, with a special outdoor service and community lunch at its historic site on Caboolture River Road.

The milestone follows last year’s 150th celebration of the adjoining cemetery, with organisers saying this year’s anniversary honours both the congregation and the role the church has played in shaping local life since the 1870s.

The anniversary service will begin at 10:45am outdoors, echoing the style of the inaugural service held in 1876.

Afterwards, the Rural Fire Brigade will serve a sausage sizzle, with refreshments from a local coffee van, alongside stalls selling handmade goods and plants. Families are encouraged to bring picnic rugs and chairs to enjoy the day.

Heritage listed by Moreton Bay City Council last year, the church has long been a landmark in the district. Recent research for a new commemorative book has revealed fresh insights into the site’s history, including the discovery that its first service was held on Sunday, November 9, 1876.

For decades it had been believed November 9 was chosen as an anniversary date to coincide with the Prince of Wales’ birthday holiday.

The book will be launched as part of the 150th celebrations, recording the history of founding families, memories of community change, and photographs and news clippings spanning generations.

The church was also recently recognised for its contribution and anniversary, having received a $250 Local Heroes Grant from Member for Glass House, Andrew Powell.
