A-G appeals two sentences

The Queensland Attorney-General has instructed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to lodge appeals against two sentences that he believes do not meet community expectations.

The Queensland Attorney-General has instructed the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) to lodge appeals against two sentences that he believes do not meet community expectations.

The first appeal concerns a juvenile involved in a tragic crash near Maryborough in April 2023. The juvenile was driving a stolen vehicle when it crashed, killing three innocent people and seriously injuring a fourth victim. The Attorney-General described the sentence handed down in this case as “manifestly inadequate.”

The second appeal relates to Brock Andrew McDonald, who was sentenced for the assault and deprivation of liberty of a young woman in Bundaberg in October 2023. The victim was attacked in the early hours of the morning, with a rope placed around her neck and dragged into a car. The Attorney-General expressed his belief that the sentence in this case also fell short of community expectations.

Notices of Appeal were lodged today with the Court of Appeal registry by the ODPP on behalf of the Attorney-General.

As the appeal process is now underway, no further comment will be made by the Attorney-General on these matters.
