A tapestry of culture

The Somerset Civic Centre’s cathedral-style ceilings set a dramatic stage for “Shared Words – Lives Lived”, a groundbreaking multimedia exhibition by local photographer and visual artist Jim Filmer, created in collaboration with Indigenous Elders.

The exhibition, which opened on November 22, uniquely combines large-screen video presentations of Elders' personal stories with stunning portraits printed on translucent fabric. These portraits, suspended from the Centre’s soaring ceilings, come to life as air currents create gentle movement, while natural light filtering through the fabric adds an ethereal quality to each image.

At the opening, Filmer shared his vision for the project, inviting viewers to see beyond stereotypes and fostering a deeper understanding of Aboriginal individuals and their unique stories. “Through these personal narratives, we hope to contribute to a more nuanced and respectful dialogue between cultures in Australia,” he said. Filmer also noted that the project led him on a personal journey of discovery, exploring potential connections to the Nharangga People.

Visitors are encouraged to take their time and experience these moving, sometimes poignant, yet ultimately inspirational stories shared by the Elders who trusted Filmer with their personal histories.

The exhibition has received strong support from Somerset Regional Council and the local community. It will run at the Somerset Civic Centre until January 10, 2025, with a two-week break for the holidays, closing from December 25 to January 6. The Somerset Civic Centre, located at 35 Esk Hampton Road, is open Monday to Friday, 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

In addition to the exhibition, a special event will take place at the Centre on December 9. ‘An Afternoon with The Sunshine Club Music Director Steve Newcomb’ will run from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
