Bella’s double golden throws
MORAYFIELD student Bella Sansom has taken the sport world storm, winning two gold medals at the Queensland School Sport State Championships in Townsville last week.

Bella won the girls 10-year-olds shot put and discus events and in doing so, booked her ticket to the School Sport Track and Field National Championships in Canberra at the end of November.
A Carmichael College student, Bella said after winning all of her events at the school carnival she decided to take up athletics.
“I wanted to get better at athletics so I asked my parents if I can do it and mum found a club,” she said.
“I thought I was going to be better at running and long jump, but I found throws were more fun and I enjoyed it more than running.”
Bella said she loved the whole experience at the state championships.
“I got to see some friends I made from other athletics clubs and I really enjoy competing at carnivals and states was so much fun,” she said.
While not usually letting her nerves get the best of her, Bella admitted she was nervous competing on the Queensland stage, but tried to stay calm and believe in herself.
Bella said the competition showed her that she can perform well under pressure.
“I had a good mindset and took a deep breath and I wanted to end on a good throw and I got a PB in my last throw to win it,” she said.
Bella’s mother, Sharon Sansom, said she is proud of Bella’s achievements at such at young age.
“Bella’s worked so hard and it’s amazing to see her dedication is paying off,” she said.
“She doesn’t like to show off her success and was even embarrassed to bring her state medals to school. She brought them, but they stayed in her bag.”
Ms Sansom said she was proud of her daughter staying composed under pressure during the championships, acknowledging some young athletes can get down on themselves if a foul happens or if throws don’t go their way.
“Bella remained calm and was able to pull herself together to put out some of the biggest throws in her career to date,” she said.
“She competed like an athlete beyond her years.”
Bella said discus is her favourite event, while her goal is to compete at the Olympics, having the world champion discus thrower for women, Valarie Allman, as her role model.
Bella will compete at the National Championships in Canberra in November.
Her family is grateful for the generosity shown by Straightline Facades and Bunneys Demolition as well as local member Chris Whiting MP.
