Bikers rev big for Red

THE ninth annual Ride for Red fundraiser saw over 100 motorbikes and cars join to raise funds for cancer research on October 4, in memory of Gronks Social Riders Club (GSRC) member Red Norman.

Organised by GSRC, riders joined on a scenic drive from Burpengary to Kenilworth, finishing at the Bribie Island Hotel, with nearly $13,500 raised for Cancer Council Queensland through various raffles and online donations.

The day was filled with camaraderie, live music, raffles, auctions, and the much-anticipated major prize draw, which included a weekend getaway at Sylvan Beach Resort, adventure tours, zoo tickets, and a meal voucher.

The Ride for Red tradition began in 2016 in memory of beloved rider Red Norman, who bravely battled brain cancer, with the event growing each year.

“The first year I think we only had around 25 riders, including Red’s family and friends, and now we have over 80 bikes, along with cars and pillons,” Red’s friend and organiser Helen Weir said.

“Donations were received by several parties and we are very appreciative of their support.

“We sometimes have people apologise that they can’t donate more, but in the end, every dollar we raise is a dollar they didn’t have.”

Looking ahead, Gronks Social Rider Club is already planning for a milestone 10th anniversary in 2026, with hopes of raising enough to sponsor a room at the Cancer House and install a commemorative plaque.

“This event is a special way to honour the memory of our friend and contribute to a cause that affects so many,” said Helen’s partner and co-organiser Gary ‘Blakey’ Blake.

“The support we’ve seen over the years has been incredible.”
