Bribie girls’ game scores $1.8m upgrade
AUSSIE Rules on Bribie Island has scored a $1.8 million facility designed to boost female participation in the sport. Jointly funded by the City of Moreton Bay and AFL Queensland, the new building at the Bribie Island Sports Complex features two unisex change rooms with ambulant showers, public amenities, storage, and a disability-compliant toilet and shower.
The upgrade comes as the Bribie Island Bulldogs celebrate a win in the U13 Girls Division 2 Brisbane Grand Final on August 31. Since 2023, NAB AFL Auskick participation has grown by 156 per cent, and junior Australian rules football is up 33 per cent year-on-year, with over 220 players this year. Women and girls’ registrations increased by 25 per cent in 2025.
Bribie Island Junior AFL Club president Dannielle McGrath said the facility is crucial for the club, with nearly 70 per cent of members being female. “Visiting female teams now have access to modern, private, and secure change rooms that meet the standards expected at all levels of the game,” she said. McGrath also highlighted the importance of ambulant-compliant toilets and showers for inclusivity and player dignity.
Head of AFL Queensland and International, Trisha Squires, praised the club for investing in Auskick and junior programs run by volunteers. “All of these upgrades are significant in ensuring our facilities are safe, inclusive, and equitable for all,” she said.
Mayor Peter Flannery said the facility supports the growing number of female sport participants in Moreton Bay. “Australian Rules football continues to experience strong growth, and this facility positions the Bulldogs to provide welcoming and inclusive facilities,” he said.
Division 1 Councillor Brooke Savige noted the facility replaces the old amenities block built in 1989. She said the upgrade improves aesthetics, supports growing junior numbers, and opens opportunities for community use and venue hire revenue. AFL Queensland contributed $50,000 through their Grand Final Facilities Fund.
