Buy local to support farmers after ag events cancelled

THE Queensland Farmers’ Federation (QFF) is calling on Queenslanders to rally behind the state’s food, fibre and foliage producers and shop locally to support the sector after major agricultural events were cancelled due to the south east Queensland CoVId-19 lockdown.

The worsening COVID-19 outbreak led to the cancellation of the weekend’s Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival while the cancellation of the 2021 Royal Queensland Show (Ekka), was announced on Monday morning.

QFF CEO Dr Georgina Davis said it was extremely disappointing that Queensland producers were once again unable to showcase their efforts, including their high-quality produce, after ensuring the state’s food security throughout the pandemic and despite significant and continuing challenges.

“These agricultural events bring agriculture directly to consumers, and celebrate and champion the essential role the sector plays in the lives of all Queenslanders,” Dr Davis said.

“Thousands of vendors and exhibitors have spent months preparing their livestock and produce to share with attendees and educate the public about Queensland agriculture sector.

“Farmers are dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic, rising input costs and a protracted drought. After this latest blow, there’s never been a better time to stand with our farming communities.”

Dr Davis thanked the local Samford and Dayboro REKO Ring groups for ensuring the produce grown and farmed for the recent Moreton Bay Food and Wine Festival had not gone to waste by providing an avenue for sales to the local community, while consumers could still support vendors that were part of the festival through a designated webpage.

“Buying local produce and paying a fair price for it is the best way Queensland consumers can support the agricultural sector,” Dr Davis said.

“By supporting farmers with their wallets and their feet, consumers will continue to play an active role in helping to ensure a bright future for Queensland agriculture.”
