The Federal Government invested $3.5 million through the Investing in Our Communities program, while Moreton Bay Council provided $5 million in recognition of the economic boost and increase to tourism this project will provide for the region.

The modernised complex has already been recognised by FIFA as one of Queensland’s premier football facilities, putting Moreton Bay in “goal scoring position” ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Hot on the heels of the Socceroos’ recent qualification for the 2026 Men’s World Cup, and the Matildas’ 4th place finish in the 2023 Women’s World Cup, football is captivating the nation, and its popularity at the grassroots level is booming.

Local resident club, Caboolture Sports FC, have been welcome recipients of the recent boom, with their participation doubling in the last seven years.

The new Moreton Bay Sports Complex will cater for this surge in grassroots football across all ages and abilities, and ensure the next generation of Australian superstars get a chance to impress on their new home turf.

General Manager of Caboolture Sports FC, Reece Dalton, said the club has experienced “huge growth” since relocating to the Moreton Bay Sports Complex in Burpengary.

“Registrations have more than doubled since 2018 – climbing from 525 players to over 1,200 registered players across 111 teams,” he said.

“Now with thousands of people using these facilities every year we’ve actually had to hire four full-time staff to manage our operations and support the growing local football community.

“So these new fields and facilities will allow us to welcome more players, support our coaches, and deliver the best possible experience for our members. Maybe we’ll even be the home of the next Messi.”

Senator for Queensland, Corinne Mulholland, said she was “impressed” with how Moreton Bay has put itself forward at every turn to seize the opportunities presented by the upcoming 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“With these new soccer fields and facilities, Moreton Bay is squarely on the map as a destination for elite teams and the complex definitely has the potential to host international football teams for training camps,” she said.

“In fact, in 2023 when Council hosted the Brazilian Women’s team here during their World Cup campaign, FIFA said this was one of Queensland’s premier football facilities.

“But most important is the investment in quality playing surfaces for local kids, and the turnout here today from local families has been a sensational way to celebrate the official opening.”

Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the investment in new and modern facilities is absolutely essential as the city grapples with the pressure of booming population growth.

“We are a Council with an eye to the future and this investment ensures we’re keeping up with the local demand for better sports facilities while also keeping the door open to international-level competition,” he said.
