ANGLICARE is encouraging Queenslanders to consider sparing a moment of their free time to help brighten the lives of older Australians in need of some social connection.
Anglicare proudly welcomes volunteers through the Aged Care Volunteer Visitors Scheme (ACVVS), which is funded by the Federal Government, pairing volunteers with older people in residential aged care or in the community.
For retiree Dale, volunteering has added purpose and joy to her weekly routine.
“When I retired, I was looking for a meaningful way to give back to my community,” he said.
“I thought I was signing up to help others, but what I found was friendship, laughter, and a real sense of purpose.
“It’s so rewarding to know that something as simple as a visit once or twice a week can mean so much.”
Chief Operating Officer, Aged and Community Service Kane Singh said retirees are often ideal volunteers because they often have time to spare, great life experience, and a deep sense of compassion.
“We’ve had many volunteers tell us that giving just 30 minutes of their week has enriched their own lives,” he said.
“It gives them a real sense of pride to give back to their community while also making a huge impact for older Australians.
“Volunteers through the ACVVS only need to commit one hour per fortnight, making it a flexible and meaningful way to get involved.
“A lot of retirees enjoy taking part in the program because of this flexibility and the ability to fit visits into their normal routines.
“Just an hour a week spent chatting over a cup of tea, playing cards, or taking a stroll can make a world of difference!”
The ACVVS is supported by the Department of Health and Aged Care.
