Council to trial Saturday opening hours at two libraries
Library lovers in Somerset will, later this year, be able to access the Kilcoy and Lowood libraries six days per week.
Somerset Regional Council has endorsed a six-month trial to open both library branches on a Saturday from 9am to 11.30am.
The trial will start in October 2023 and continue through to March 2024.
Somerset Regional Council Deputy Mayor Helen Brieschke said the trial was in response to community feedback and changing behaviour of residents.
“This trial is an important step forward in the evolution of libraries being more than just a place to borrow books but a place of connection,” Cr Brieschke said.
“Council looks forward to opening these two library branches on Saturdays particularly because it now makes a service accessible to those who have been unable to visit during current business hours.”
Cr Brieschke said Council had selected only Kilcoy and Lowood to open on Saturdays for the trial because of existing data.
“Statistically these two branches have much higher visitation and higher participation in events and programs than our library branches at Esk and Toogoolawah,” Cr Brieschke said.
“Council looks forward to welcoming more residents to our libraries when the trial starts later this year.”
