Crisafulli Government 'protects Queenslanders' from Green Tape Bill

The Crisafulli Government says it has decided not to adopt Federal Government waste targets that it says would impose additional financial burdens on Queensland families and businesses.

The Crisafulli Government says it has decided not to adopt Federal Government waste targets that it says would impose additional financial burdens on Queensland families and businesses.

While the state is committed to improving recycling and waste management, it will pursue these goals without binding itself to Federal targets that could significantly increase costs.

Minister for the Environment, Andrew Powell, stated that Queensland’s updated Waste Strategy will focus on reducing waste and increasing recycling, but will avoid implementing initiatives that would raise the cost of living for residents and businesses.

Queensland-based trials indicated that the Federal targets could increase household waste collection costs by up to 20 times. In response, the state government has opted to continue addressing waste challenges in a cost-effective manner, working closely with industry and local governments to ensure that solutions are practical and do not result in excessive costs for Queenslanders.
