Crisafulli government renames satellite hospitals to satellite health centres

The Crisafulli government has delivered on a key commitment from its 100 Day Plan by renaming Queensland’s satellite hospitals to satellite health centres to prevent confusion about their services.

The move follows overwhelming feedback from clinicians, with a survey of 2,780 respondents—including frontline health workers—recommending the name change. A clinical advisory group, representing all seven facilities, supported the decision.

Minister for Health and Ambulance Services Tim Nicholls said the renaming was necessary to ensure patients understood the purpose of the centres.

“These facilities were designed for minor injuries, outpatient care, and same-day services—not emergency treatment,” Mr Nicholls said.

“The former Labor government’s misleading name led to more than 3,500 patients with life-threatening conditions presenting at these facilities last year, putting themselves at risk.

“We’ve listened to the experts and the community, and this change will ensure clarity.”

The satellite health centres, located in Caboolture, Redlands, Ripley, Tugun, Kallangur, Eight Mile Plains, and Bribie Island, will also be upgraded with CT and MRI machines to expand services.

Mr Nicholls said the change was part of broader health reforms, including the government’s recent launch of real-time health data transparency initiatives.
