Young innovators from Esk State School have been recognised on the state stage, taking out 3rd place in the Years 4–6 category of Queensland’s 2025 Buy Smart Competition.
Esk students Maggie and Indie were joined by Member for Nanango, Deb Frecklington, as they were announced as 3rd place winners at Parliament House on October 30.
The competition, run by the Office of Fair Trading, encourages students to learn about smart consumer choices, scams, and financial literacy through creative projects, with more than $15,000 in prize money on offer”
Indie and Maggie impressed judges with their clever entry ‘The Money Bakers’, which delivered money management tips through the fun theme of a baking show where they used the idea of “following a recipe” as a metaphor for saving and spending wisely.
Ms Frecklington said she was proud to congratulate the student, both as the Member for Nanango and in her role as Attorney-General and Minister for Justice and Minister for Integrity.
“Young people are growing up in a fast-moving world, and how we use money has changed significantly over generations,” she said.
“It’s wonderful to see our local students being recognised at a state level for their hard work and innovation.
“It shows how young people can learn to make smart choices as consumers, whether it’s budgeting, spotting a scam, or reading the fine print and they’re doing it in such engaging ways.”
Ms Frecklington added she was “amazed” by the knowledge and creativity Buy Smart contestants demonstrated, from podcasts and short films to storybooks and games.
Esk State School said it were “incredibly proud” of their two students. “This experience was not only a wonderful achievement but also a valuable learning opportunity — helping our students build real-world skills in financial literacy, teamwork, and civic engagement,” the school said.
“We are so proud of their effort, creativity, and the way they represented Esk with pride.”
