Extra police out in force during state-wide NYE road safety blitz

Queensland police are gearing up for their busiest night of the year with additional officers deployed across the state to enforce road safety and target the Fatal Five behaviours ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations.

Queensland police are gearing up for their busiest night of the year with additional officers deployed across the state to enforce road safety and target the Fatal Five behaviours ahead of New Year's Eve celebrations.

The heightened presence comes after Queensland recorded its worst year for fatal crashes in a decade, with 302 lives lost in 2024, a concerning rise from the previous year’s toll of 276.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie reaffirmed the government’s commitment to cracking down on dangerous driving. “We will not tolerate drivers who disregard the Fatal Five—speeding, drink driving, distraction, fatigue, and seatbelt use. They are putting themselves and others at risk and ruining celebrations,” Minister Purdie said.

As part of Operation Mistletoe, which launched on December 13, additional officers will be patrolling on land, in the air, and on water, as crowds gather to ring in the new year at popular spots. The operation will run until January 27, 2025.
