Retiring Mayor Graeme Lehmann and Cr Cheryl Gaedtke gathered with colleagues to mark almost seven decades of Local Government service between them.

A celebratory morning tea was held on March 13, following the last council meeting before elections.

Cr Lehmann started his local government career in Somerset as a councillor of Esk Shire Council in 1994, before becoming Mayor in 2004.

Cr Gaedtke contributed to local government for 40 years, including eight years’ service as a councillor and 31 years as a council employee.

Chief Executive Officer Andrew Johnson reflected on Cr Lehmann’s many accomplishments spanning three decades.

“Mayor Lehmann has been instrumental in driving progress, fostering unity, and enhancing the quality of life for residents,” Mr Johnson said.

“Working collaboratively with the Somerset community led to remarkable achievements under Mayor Lehmann’s leadership.

These include the impressive accomplishment of eliminating Council debt, positioning Somerset as the only debt-free council in south-east Queensland.

“His leadership style has been characterised by a tireless commitment to service.”

Mr Johnson said throughout his tenure, Cr Lehmann has championed initiatives to improve infrastructure, foster economic growth, and promote social cohesion.

“His efforts have left a lasting mark on Somerset, shaping the community into a vibrant and inclusive place to live and work,” he said.

“His leadership, integrity, and unwavering commitment to public service have left an enduring legacy that will continue to inspire future generations. ”

While his departure marks the end of an era, it also signals the beginning of a new chapter in Somerset’s history—a chapter shaped by Mayor Lehmann’s vision, compassion, and dedication to excellence.

Many of us will never forget Mayor Lehmann’s belief that Somerset is ‘God’s Own Country.’”

Mr Johnson said Cr Gaedtke’s career with council stands as a testament to her unwavering dedication to the community’s welfare and advancement.
