Golden years and grand celebrations

WITH October marking Queensland Seniors Month, a state-wide initiative to celebrate the contribution of older adults and promote social inclusion and wellbeing, Moreton Bay and Somerset councils are hosting a range of events to bring seniors together.

In Somerset, council is inviting seniors to its Regional Seniors Event on Friday, 17 October at the Somerset Civic Centre (8.45 am to 2 pm). The free program includes entertainment by the Memphis Moovers Roving Band, trivia games, a services expo, lunch, and a lucky-draw. Events are funded via Council’s In Good Company seniors program. moretonbay.qld.gov.au

Meanwhile, in Moreton Bay, a full calendar of Seniors Month activities is underway, offering opportunities for connection, learning, and fun. Highlights include Tai Chi and Devonshire Tea on October 12, bringing a Sunday of motion and morning tea. The day will start with a class in Tai Chi at the Caboolture Historical Village, with instructors from Inner Circle Academy, then retire to the village hotel verandah for a Devonshire Tea with fresh scones, jam, and cream.

Also scheduled is the Family Day – Seniors Month at Caboolture Historical Village on October 18, with guided tours, vintage games, a train ride, and live music.

Both councils emphasised the importance of Seniors Month as a time to address social isolation and celebrate older residents. Moreton Bay’s programme is open to people “of all ages and backgrounds” to foster connection and highlight the roles older Queenslanders play in their communities.
