AS THE weather warms, Esk Police are experiencing a significant increase in their workload as people head outdoors. This increase is consistent with previous years as traffic volumes rise with the warmer weather. As the warmer months approach, locals see an increase in usage of the region’s beautiful dams: Somerset, Wivenhoe and Atkinsons Dam.
With this however comes a responsibility to use these waterways appropriately and safely, whether it be in a boat, on a jetski or purely swimming. This can be done by operating water craft to the conditions, using the appropriate protective equipment such as floatation devices and life jackets, and if you are not a proficient swimmer, remaining in areas close to the shore where you can touch the ground.
Traffic incidents are also taking the spotlight, with Esk Police having issued 176 Traffic Infringement Notices, predominantly for speeding violations, since July 1.
Alarmingly, seven of these were for speeds more than 40 km/h over the limit, with the highest recorded speed being 163 km/h. Such extreme speeds result in hefty fines, demerit points, and six-month license suspensions. In addition to traffic infringements, police have responded to eight traffic crashes, seven of which involved significant injuries requiring hospitalization.
Esk Police Station is open Monday to Wednesday from 8 AM to 4 PM.
