KILCOY’S Danyon Turner has made his British Road Racing Sidecar Championship debut in England last month, riding alongside eight-time sidecar world champion Tim Reeves at Brands Hatch.

The 25-year-old Danyon and his brother, Corey, embarked on a sidecar scouting trip to Europe in October, having the chance to compete alongside Mr Reeves after watching him compete in the FIM Sidecar World Championship in Germany.

“The first weekend that we flew in we actually watched him race and Corey exchanged numbers with him,” he said.

“It’s not every day you get a call from an eight times world champion to say jump on the bike, so I think I had to take up that opportunity for sure.”

Due to license issues, which could not be resolved in time, Danyon and Corey were forced to miss practice and qualifying for the Brands Hatch championship.

This, however, did not stop the brothers from having some fun with no expectations with Mr Reeves.

“We had to start from the back of the grid and I was slightly nervous, but excited still,” he said.

“We ended up coming through the field as best we could and ended up finishing eighth.”

In race two, the pair started from seventh, and soon moved up to third position, however a brake issue forced them out of the race.

“We lost the brakes into one of the corners and went wide, then Tim pulled in because it was unsafe to continue,” he said.

“It was a pretty cool experience for me as I got a bit of a taste of what the championship over there is like.”

Danyon said sharing a bike and track with someone else for the first time relies heavily on trust.

“It was a big thing for me to ride next to someone else, because I’ve only ever been on the side of the bike with my brother Corey,” he said.

Danyon is the youngest of four children born into a motor racing family, having ridden solo bikes growing up before his first sidecar competition in 2019.

“My dad used to race sidecars back in his day with his twin brother, so we’re like second generation Turner brothers,” he said.

“Dad whipped out the side car and from then on I sold my solo and committed to side cars with me brother.

“We ended up entering the Queensland championship round, and we ended up winning that.”

Thoughts then shifted to the five round Australian championship, with Danyon and Corey committing to the whole circuit and we ended up winning it in the first year.

The brothers have seven lap records at seven different tracks in Australia.

Danyon said he has sold his bike and sold the house he shared with his brother Corey.

“We’re just going to put everything into trying to give it a crack at racing in the world championship next year,” he said.

“We’ve brought a bike, we’ve brought a little motor home over there that fits the bike in the back, for us it’s the dream.”

Danyon and Corey are planning on arriving in France in March next year for testing ahead of the seven round FIM Sidecar World Championship on tracks throughout Europe. Follow the progress of the Turner brothers on their Facebook page at 52 MotoSports.
