Laycock for the win

STEPHANIE Laycock appears to have been elected the new Somerset councillor, set to replace the vacant spot left by the resignation of Kylee Isidro in June.

Despite only 62 per cent of votes having been counted as of September 16, Ms Laycock is dominating the election, receiving 41 per cent of votes (over 5,000 votes at time of print).

Bud Smith is coming second with 25 per cent of the votes, followed by Geoff Williams (19 per cent) and Robyn Tucker (15 per cent). Less than 8,000 ballots remain to be counted out of more than 20,000.

While Ms Laycock has yet to officially claim victory, she thanked all Somerset residents for their engagement during the byelection.

“Your time is valuable, and I’m truly grateful for the effort you’ve made in the lead up to the postal by-election,” she said in a statement.

“No matter the outcome, my commitment remains the same: to keep supporting our community, staying actively involved in local groups and events, and taking every opportunity to learn and contribute.

“I’m excited to keep building my knowledge of business and our Somerset region past, present and future while continuing to champion our rural industry, community spirit and the next generation of leaders.

“Together, we can keep working toward a stronger, better and sustainable Somerset.”

Ms Laycock is a third generation Somerset resident, having grown up in the area and she said she was dedicated to giving back to the community.

As a councillor, she promised to bring persistence, dedication, and a genuine understanding of what makes Somerset special.

“I will always advocate with integrity and an open mind,” she said.

“I believe good leadership comes from listening, listening to residents, to community leaders, and to those who know our towns best.

“My vision is for Somerset to continue improving and building a sustainable future that benefits everyone, whether that is through stronger infrastructure, supporting local businesses, encouraging youth involvement, or protecting the rural lifestyle we all value.

“I am focused on leadership and community, and I believe it is vital to provide opportunities for younger generations to share their perspectives and to develop long term skills that will strengthen our region well into the future.”

Candidate Geoff Williams thanked Ms Laycock, as well as Mr Smith and Ms Tucker, for their warmth and commitment during the election.

“It has been a pleasure meeting you all. No matter the outcome, I wish you all the very best for the future. I hope if we meet again, you will make yourself known to me,” he said in a statement.

“As for the people of Somerset, I have been absolutely honoured and proud to walk the streets campaigning to be your next councillor.

“Many thanks for this opportunity.”
