Little stags, big hearts
THE Lowood Stags Under 10s rugby league team recently made their mark at the prestigious Gordon Tallis Cup, a junior rugby league carnival held annually in Queensland.

This year’s event took place at the Townsville & District Junior Rugby League Grounds, drawing teams from across the state for a weekend of spirited competition and camaraderie.
Parent and volunteer Meghan Poustie said the kids “had an absolute ball,” playing teams from all over Queensland, including North Queensland and Rockhampton.
“It was fantastic for them to meet new friends, learn different techniques, and see how other teams approach the game,” she said.
“It was really good experience for them to go and meet different teams that they wouldn’t normally play on the circuit and experience how they run a game in comparison to how we run a game.”
The carnival spanned three days, with the Stags playing ten games against a variety of opponents. While official scores aren’t kept for the under 10s, Meghan noted that the team performed admirably and, most importantly, enjoyed every moment.
“There was amazing team spirit, not just within our team but with others as well,” she said.
“The kids cheered each other on, shared tips, and even warmed up together.
“It was wonderful to see such good sportsmanship.”
A highlight of the weekend was a visit from rugby league legend Gordon Tallis, with the Stags proudly posing for a photo with the cup’s namesake.
The Lowood Stags are a local junior rugby league club, fielding teams from U6s to U12s. Training takes place at the Lowood Rec Grounds, and the club competes in the Ipswich Rugby League competition.
The Stags welcome new players and families to be part of their vibrant community.
