New Citizens Join in Australia Day Celebrations in Somerset
SOMERSET welcomed 25 new citizens at an Australia Day citizenship ceremony at the Somerset Civic Centre on Tuesday, 26 January.
The conferees from six countries, including Thailand, India, France, South Africa, Philippines and the United Kingdom became citizens as part of the Somerset Australia Day Awards Ceremony at Esk. Somerset Regional Council Mayor Graeme Lehmann said the ceremony was an opportunity for all Australians, whether they are citizens by birth or by choice, to join national celebrations that reflect, respect and celebrate.
The global pandemic, COVID-19, and the subsequent guidelines on gathering sizes and social distancing resulted in fewer citizenship ceremonies than usual in 2020.
“Each year we are privileged to welcome new Australians to our growing community as part of Australia Day celebrations,” Cr Lehmann said.
