Parkrun connects community
The North Lakes parkrun is a cornerstone event in the Moreton Bay running community, active since 2012 and bringing locals together every Saturday morning.
Parkrun is a global initiative hosting free, community events where participants can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or simply spectate.
North Lakes hosts the longest-running parkrun in the region, attracting around 250 participants weekly. Community members gather at Lake Eden every Saturday at 7am to complete a 5km course around the lake.
Event director Kate Vietheer said the parkrun fosters a strong community spirit.
“It’s a really nice community vibe. People come for the social aspect, to get fresh air and exercise, and to do it at their own pace,” she said.
“It’s a fantastic way to meet people and get outside.”
Kate emphasized that the event is inclusive and caters to all ages and abilities.
“We have super fit, fast runners finishing in under 20 minutes, walkers using walking frames, and little kids as young as four years old who can register,” she said.
“Our parkrun welcomes everyone — from kids to retirees — including those who volunteer even if they don’t run the 5K.”
