Police launch road safety Christmas blitz, with motorbikes out in force targeting dangerous drivers

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has launched its annual Operation Mistletoe, a state-wide road safety initiative designed to reduce road fatalities during the Christmas holiday period.

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has launched its annual Operation Mistletoe, a state-wide road safety initiative designed to reduce road fatalities during the Christmas holiday period.

Over the next five weeks, an increased number of police officers will be on Queensland roads, including more than 100 overt and covert police motorbikes, all equipped with mobile radar technology. These motorcycles will be used strategically to target dangerous driving behaviour such as speeding, drink-driving, and driver inattention.

The operation was officially launched in King George Square, where more than 30 police officers showcased their high-visibility presence as part of the campaign. Minister for Police and Emergency Services Dan Purdie addressed the gathering, stressing the need for increased vigilance as the state approaches the grim milestone of 300 road deaths in 2024.

“Queensland is on track to have more than 300 lives lost on our roads this year – the highest number of deaths in nearly two decades,” Minister Purdie said. He urged drivers to avoid distractions, take regular breaks, and adhere to speed limits to reduce the risk of tragedy.

Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg echoed these sentiments, emphasising the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during the busy holiday period.

QPS Commissioner Steve Gollschewski confirmed that road fatalities had risen significantly this year, with 287 lives lost as of December 12, 2024. Many of these fatalities have been linked to speeding and impaired driving.

The operation, which runs until January 27, 2025, will see police patrolling both urban and rural areas of Queensland, from Coolangatta to Cape York.
