Radio upgrade for Somerset SES Unit
RADIO network upgrades were the focus as about 30 members and recent recruits from the Somerset-based State Emergency Services (SES) groups attended the recent communications training evening at the Esk SES headquarters.
Those in attendance were briefed by instructor Penny Butler on the intricacies of the recently introduced Government Wireless Network (GWN) as it applies to the Somerset SES Unit.
These new Ultra high frequency (UHF) radios provide vastly improved coverage along the length of the Somerset region, and allow direct communications between SES personnel and members of other agencies involved in an operational response.
GWN radios are also fitted to the six vehicles and four flood boats operated by the Somerset SES Unit.
