Repeat offenders targeted in record SPER enforcement blitz

A record 838 vehicles have been seized by Queensland’s State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) team in 2024 as part of a crackdown on fine dodgers, including luxury sports cars such as Porsches, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis.

A record 838 vehicles have been seized by Queensland’s State Penalties Enforcement Registry (SPER) team in 2024 as part of a crackdown on fine dodgers, including luxury sports cars such as Porsches, Ferraris, and Lamborghinis.

The targeted enforcement operation saw significant action across the state, with 94 vehicles seized on the Gold Coast, 68 in Townsville and Cairns, and 31 in Central Queensland. In southeast Queensland, over 130 vehicles were seized during one operation focused on repeat offenders.

The enforcement blitz comes during a high-risk period on the roads, particularly in December, when road safety is a key concern. Speeding, red light violations, and other dangerous driving offences are among the most common infractions committed by repeat SPER defaulters.

SPER officers have the authority to clamp and seize vehicles and other property, such as boats, trailers, motorbikes, and jet skis, when debts remain unpaid.

Treasurer David Janetzki said that SPER’s enforcement actions were critical in holding offenders accountable. "Queenslanders expect that those who repeatedly endanger others on the roads face consequences," he said. "Our government is committed to taking action against those who flout the law, and SPER will continue to seize property to recover money owed."

The 2024 operations have led to the auctioning of 109 vehicles, including luxury cars, to recoup the fines. Janetzki urged individuals with outstanding fines to settle them promptly, reminding the public that avoiding fines starts with responsible driving.
