SEQ wins Over 70 cricket match in Caboolture

SOUTH-EAST Queensland (SEQ) defeated New Zealand by 25 runs in a competitive Over 70 cricket match at Caboolture Sports Cricket Club last Friday.

Cool conditions meant it wasn’t usual cricket weather, while the format was a little unusual as the game was played in quarters.

The locals batted for 20 overs before the visitors did likewise, and then the locals faced another 20 overs before the visitors faced the remainder of their allotted overs.

SEQ tallied 89 runs for the loss of two wickets in its first 20 overs, before New Zealand’s score stood at 4-91 at the halfway stage of its innings.

SEQ boosted its total by 134 runs in the second half of its innings, and then the Kiwis could only add 107 runs.

Batters retired after facing 40 balls, but they could resume their innings later on after the remaining wickets fell.

John Guiver (46 not out), Ian Petherick (42 not out) and Andrew Pinho (36) were the best of SEQ’s batters, with Guiver and Petherick retiring before the latter was able to return to the crease.

Dennis Lander was New Zealand’s standout bowler with 4-21 from six overs.

The visitors faltered following a 49-run opening stand, and they were in trouble in the second half of their innings when their fifth wicket fell with 94 runs on the board.

Subsequent partnerships of 36 and 39 unfolded, but New Zealand was unable to keep up with the required run rate.

Four Kiwi batters passed 20 but none reached 30.

The wickets were shared among SEQ’s bowlers, while Keith Reynolds had the best figures as he captured 3-24 off five overs.
