Silver medals for martial arts trio
Three athletes from the Morayfield-based Red Dragon Martial Arts school achieved silver medals at the Brisbane BJJ (Brazilian jiujitsu) Championships at the Nissan Arena on February 4.
Hayden Birmingham earned silver in Gi, while Kelly Bodsworth and Lyric Van Der Kolk did likewise in Gi and NoGi.
Hayden was in the ‘Men’s White Belt Under-88kg’ category, and Kelly was in the ‘14 years Girls Orange Belt’, while Lyric was in the ‘15 years Girls Yellow Belt’.
Hayden, Lyric and Kelly were among 447 competitors, as teams from all over Queensland attended, with the athletes ranging from the age of six up to adult, while there was a variety of skill levels.
Head Instructor of Red Dragon Martial Arts, Brett Fenton, said the Red Dragon trio did very well against very strong competition.
“Both the girls were up against more experienced competitors and learnt a lot from their matches,” he said.
“It was Hayden’s first competition and he learnt so much, and looks forward to competing again soon.”
