Blessed with clear blue skies and shimmering waters beneath the iconic Glasshouse Mountains, the festival’s second year proved to be bigger, brighter, welcoming over 250 paddlers.

From the moment the ceremonial drums began to echo across the water, the crowd knew they were witnessing something special.

The day began with the Blessing of the Boats, led by a monk from the Chenrezig Institute. The ritual not only honoured tradition but also set a tone of harmony and togetherness for the event.

Member for Pumicestone, Ariana Doolan, said it was “so special to put eyes on the dragon boats alongside the Monks at the Blessing of the Boats and see our community come alive with colour, energy, and connection.”

The highlight of the blessing was the opening of the Third Eye of ‘The Kinross’, a striking new dragon boat made possible through the generous support of Busy Fingers Fundraisers. Moreton Bay Division 1 Councillor, Brooke Savige, had the honour of completing this traditional act, officially welcoming the boat into the Pumicestone fleet.

As the festival continued, the crowd was treated to a breathtaking performance by the Lion Dancers, whose vibrant movements, accompanied by rhythmic drums and cymbals, captivated audiences of all ages. The cultural spectacle was a reminder of the deep traditions woven into dragon boat racing, while also adding a lively, festive atmosphere.

Nature itself joined the celebration when dolphins appeared alongside the racing boats, delighting spectators and reminding everyone of Bribie Island’s unique natural environment.

On the competitive side, 264 paddlers took to the water, showcasing teamwork, endurance, and determination. The inaugural Health Professionals Challenge offered a new highlight, with Dr Diarmuid de Burca’s team of Wamuran Doctors taking first place.

“First of all, great club, warm welcoming and interested in people,” Dr de Burca said. “Great sport - very accessible - ideal for improving your overall body strength and your aerobic fitness, but best of all is the sense of camaraderie and belonging.”

The day ended with the Coomera Dragons powerhouse team of 49 members securing the coveted Perpetual Trophy, presented by Keith Wilson from Knobel & Davis Real Estate.

DragonFest was made possible thanks to the backing of major sponsors Bribie Island Hotel and Knobel & Davis Real Estate, along with a grant from the City of Moreton Bay. Countless local businesses also supported the event through raffle prizes and donations.

More than just a race day, DragonFest 2025 was a celebration of culture, community, and the natural beauty of Bribie Island — an event that continues to grow into a beloved annual tradition.
