Star suspension deferred

The suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s casino licence has been deferred until 31 March 2025. The deferral follows the Queensland Government’s decision to assess the casino's progress on key remediation measures before determining the future of its licence.

The suspension of The Star Gold Coast’s casino licence has been deferred until 31 March 2025. The deferral follows the Queensland Government’s decision to assess the casino's progress on key remediation measures before determining the future of its licence.

Originally scheduled to begin on 20 December 2024, the 90-day suspension has been postponed to allow further evaluation of The Star's efforts to address a range of issues. These include cultural reform, safer gambling practices, risk management, financial crime, and governance.

The Government’s decision comes after receiving independent advice from Special Manager Nicholas Weeks, who has been tasked with overseeing the remediation process. Mr Weeks’ role has been extended until 30 June 2025, and his assessment of The Star’s progress will play a crucial role in determining whether the casino licence should be suspended.

Attorney-General Deb Frecklington stated that the Government is committed to holding The Star accountable and ensuring transparency in the regulatory process. She emphasised that while this deferral provides The Star with additional time to meet the required standards, it should not be assumed that further extensions will be granted.

“The remediation actions must be The Star’s urgent priority,” Attorney-General Frecklington said. “Failure to meet milestones could result in the suspension of its licence.”

The updated remediation plan is available on The Star’s website, and the outcome of the assessment will be made public following the Government’s March 2025 decision.
