MORAYFIELD athlete Bella Sansom is set to continue her impressive progress at the School Sport Australia Track and Field National Championships in Canberra this weekend, November 27-30.

Bella will compete in the 10-year-olds shot and the 10-year-olds discus at her first national championships, after dominating in both events at the recent Queensland School Sport competition.

Bella said she is looking forward to the atmosphere at the championships.

“I am feeling very excited about travelling to Canberra and competing at Nationals against the best female throwers my age in Australia,” she said.

“I hope to throw a PB in each event, I think coming top 10 in the country would be good.”

Bella said she has been preparing well for the competition with her training at Deception Bay Little Athletics Club.

The Carmichael College student has impressed coaches and spectators alike since taking up the throwing events two years ago.

Bella’s mother, Sharon Sansom, said she is a quiet achiever.

“I am proud that she has stayed humble throughout her success over the last two seasons since starting athletics,” she said.

Ms Sansom said she just wants Bella to have fun and enjoy the experience at the national championships.

“The main thing is that she’s happy and enjoying herself, and that she’s learning something about herself and her sport whenever she competes,” she said.

Deception Bay Little Athletics Club throws coach, Garth Cooper, said, he is impressed by Bella’s focus and work ethic at such a young age.

“She is an incredibly dedicated, motivated young lady,” he said.

“On her first week of competition at club night, she threw the discus over her head and I caught it at the back of the circle.

“Bella has the ability to compose herself, to handle the complex synchronisation of muscle groups, to make it all work.”

Cooper said the key for any athlete is their attitude and love for the sport, and Bella is no different.

“There’s no good being a champion athlete if you’re not a champion person first,” he said.

“Haven’t had to really push that with Bella because she’s so humble.”
