Unmasking generosity

BALL gowns, masks, chandeliers and candle lights flooded Esk on Saturday, September 13, as the Somerset community gathered for an opulent and elegant night at the 2025 Mayoral Gala Charity Ball at the Somerset Civic Centre.

The biennial event raised money for the Mayoral Gala Charity Ball Fund, which supports charitable organisations helping those in the community facing adversity.

Some of the fundraising efforts included a live auction, led by Ray White Rural Esk and Toogoolawah auctioneer Peter Chant. Several major items were auctioned off, such as a $2,000 e-bike, a 6 burner BBQ grill, a Ramblers skydiving experience, a family and pet photoshoot by Fernvale photographer KnJ Photography, and a private Valentine’s Dinner on the Brisbane River.

A silent auction also took place, which included items such as a statement Mimco necklace, a photo canvas, and a laptop case and wallet.

For attendees looking to contribute to the fundraising efforts without spending hundreds, several raffle prizes were up for grabs, with each raffle ticket contributing $20 to the fundraising efforts. Raffle prizes included donated hampers, a bathhouse discount voucher, Australia Zoo family passes, and a handmade quilt.

Somerset Mayor Jason Wendt said the masquerade ball was a great night for Somerset.

“I am always amazed by the generosity of our community, and I look forward to working with Council to ensure the funds we have raised make tangible, positive differences in the lives of Somerset’s most disadvantaged,” Cr Wendt said.

Cr Wendt also thanked every sponsor for their generous contribution to the night.

“Without our sponsors this fundraiser simply wouldn’t be possible, and we are deeply grateful for their support,” Cr Wendt said.

“A special thanks goes to our Platinum Sponsors – CPM Civil, Brown Contractors and Community Bank Lowood-Fernvale.

“The Somerset Civic Centre came to life with performances from ARIA Award Winner Karise Eden, The Con Artists Jazz Band from Griffith University’s Queensland Conservatorium, and the Baker Boys Band.

“We had incredible food courtesy of the chefs at Esk Grand Hotel, and wonderful service supported by Toogoolawah State High School students.”

The total amount of money raised through the night has not been tallied yet, as of Tuesday, September 16, when The Sentinel goes to print.
