Walking against cancer

YEAR 9 Toogoolawah State High School students swapped classrooms for the outdoors on September 12, completing a 19-kilometre charity walk along the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail, from Brisbane Valley Roasters in Esk back to the school.

Part of The Rite Journey program, the initiative aimed to raise awareness and funds for children with cancer, the leading cause of death among kids in their age group. Along the route, students left hand-painted rocks, each featuring a QR code that passersby could scan to donate directly to the cause.

Head Teacher of Years 9 and 10, Bill Moloney, said the program encourages students to take ownership of the fundraiser, from selecting the charity to designing posters, sending emails, and organising bake sales.

“We want the students to do something bigger than themselves,” he said. “It’s about moving beyond childhood behaviors and understanding the impact they can have on the world.”

In preparation, students learned about how cancer affects children and adults through classroom discussions and videos. The walk challenged them physically and offered lessons in empathy and resilience.

“There will be times when their feet are sore, but it’s nothing compared to the pain a child with cancer endures,” Mr Moloney said. Students were asked to reflect on what it would be like if someone they loved was battling cancer or to put themselves in the shoes of a child facing such challenges.

Inspired by last year’s walk, which received strong community support after a teacher’s personal loss, this year’s students aimed to continue spreading awareness and kindness—one step and one painted rock at a time.

Those wishing to support the cause can look out for the colorful rocks along the Rail Trail or visit https://childhoodcancer.asn.au/. Every contribution provides hope to children and families affected by cancer.
