Wedding woven in history

A DESCENDANT of one of the Brisbane Valley’s most prominent pioneering families returned to her ancestral roots on October 25 to marry at a historic site established by her great-great-grandfather, Henry Plantagenet Somerset.

Kristina Somerset and her new husband Tom Robson travelled more than 5,000 kilometres from Carnarvon, Western Australia, to exchange vows at the Caboonbah Undenominational Church, which has been part of the community for more than 120 years.

The Caboonbah Church, built by local pioneers including Henry Somerset — after whom both Somerset Dam and the Somerset Region are named — remains a treasured local landmark. Complete with its white steeple, bell and country charm, the church was the perfect setting for Kristina’s lifelong dream of a family wedding steeped in history.

Adding a touch of natural beauty to Kristina’s dream wedding, the couple chose October, hoping the jacarandas surrounding the church would be in full bloom — and they were. The vibrant purple blossoms framed the scene perfectly, making for a picture-book ceremony.

Guests travelled from across the country, with bridesmaids coming from the Sunshine Coast and Mount Isa, groomsmen — Tom’s brothers — from Sydney, and Kristina’s brother from Geelong.

The reception followed at Wah Cottage in Toogoolawah, with help from several local businesses. After the celebrations, the newlyweds enjoyed a brief “minimoon” in Maleny before returning to Western Australia.

The Caboonbah Undenominational Church remains a symbol of inclusivity and heritage. Built to welcome people of all faiths, it continues to host weddings, christenings, and community events. Each year, the church holds two major gatherings — the Bunyip Picnic in April and the Annual Service being held this week, on November 8, celebrating 120 years.

For more information about the upcoming anniversary celebration, which is open to the public, as well as those interested in events at the historic site, email caboonbahchurch@gmail.com.
