Wolves make history
THE Stanley River Wolves are celebrating a historic achievement, with both their A Grade and Reserve Grade teams reaching the finals in SCGRL for the first time in over 30 years.
After a challenging season last year, where the A Grade team finished with the wooden spoon and the Reserve Grade came second last, the club has experienced a remarkable turnaround.
The A Grade secured their spot in the Big Dog Pet Food SCGRL 2025 Grand Final after battling against the Maroochydore Swans on August 30, taking home the win 26-22. Their opponent in the Grand Final will be decided this weekend, September 7, with Maroochydore Swans and Coolum Colts fighting for the final spot.
The Reserve Grade will be contesting for a Grand Final spot in the Taylex Wastewater SCGRL 2025 competition against Coolum Colts, playing the Beerwah Bulldogs on September 7, after beating the Caloundra Sharks on August 30, winning 18-4.
Stanley River Wolves president, Sam Copper, called both teams’ achievements “amazing”. “To have two teams in the finals is a massive achievement for the club, and the boys—super proud of them all,” he said.
The A Grade squad will be focusing on recovery and light training this week before ramping up intensity next week, while the Reserve Grade is putting in hard work ahead of their decisive game against Beerwah this Saturday. Mr Cooper said the Reserve team is not taking the game against Beerwah lightly, as they were the premiers last year and are “a bloody good side”. However, the Wolves are going into the preliminary final match confident, as they “know what they’re up against”.
Mr Cooper credited the club’s transformation, from bottom of the ladder to potential champions, to a subtle, but important, culture shift within the club. “Recruitment of some players and the addition in the coaching staff of Daniel Green has been massive for our A Grade coach, helping him out behind the scenes,” he said. “Just overall, the buy-in from the club and all the boys getting around each other and playing for the jersey.”
The Reserve Grade will be playing Beerwah on September 7 at 4pm in the Preliminary Final at the Sunshine Coast Stadium. The A Grade is playing the Grand Final on September 14, 4:30pm at the Sunshine Coast Stadium.
