A long-awaited youth shelter in Strathpine is set to open in early 2026, after years of fundraising, planning and partnership between community charity Chameleon Housing and builder Ausbuild.

The purpose-built 1,613m² facility will provide safe accommodation for young people experiencing homelessness, many of whom have been forced to couch surf, sleep rough or face unsafe living environments.

The milestone follows three years of sustained support from Ausbuild, which has helped Chameleon Housing secure the property, strengthen operations and raise critical funds.

Ausbuild’s annual Housing for Happiness charity galas raised approximately $213,000, with each event contributing toward the project.

Ausbuild Joint Managing Director Matt Bell emphasised the builder-developer’s commitment to building opportunities for young people in their community.

“Seeing this facility come to life makes every fundraising event and every hour of planning worthwhile,” he said.

“This shelter will give vulnerable young people in Moreton Bay not just a roof over their heads, but a real chance to get back on their feet, pursue their goals, and reach their potential.”

Over the past five years, Chameleon Housing has provided safe accommodation for 184 people aged between 16-25.

The new Strathpine facility features five bedrooms and bathrooms, as well as a self-contained transition unit designed to support residents who are approaching independence but need a stable place to stay.

The property includes spacious kitchen and recreational areas to help teach essential life skills, as well as dedicated office spaces and on-site staff bedroom.

Chameleon Housing Manager, Nicki Kemp, said that the journey to secure the facility has been powered by grassroots community support.

“This facility represents hope and a fresh start for young people in our community who are facing homelessness,” she said.
