Yowies and Bulldogs share the points

THE Kilcoy Yowies had a drawn result for the third time this year as the Yowies and Beerwah Bulldogs scored 30 points apiece at Chris Kenny Oval last Saturday.

This Sunshine Coast and Gympie Rugby League (SCGRL) C grade clash at the Cooran-based venue had several momentum shifts, while the goal-kicking was faultless as all of the tries were converted.

The match had a much different flavour from when the teams met on Beerwah soil back on April 22, when the Bulldogs prevailed 20-10.

A runaway victory to the Bulldogs loomed as a possibility last Saturday as they bolted to an 18-0 lead, before the Yowies clawed back and were on level terms following two tries to Suepasi Pelesafiame and one to Peniasi Tagitagivalu.

Beerwah regained the upper hand with back-to-back tries, before Kilcoy did likewise with tries to Marika Tamanidrove and Keverieli Waqa.

Waqa’s footwork was too good for Beerwah’s defence as his try closed the margin to two points, before the successful conversion tied the score up with only two minutes left.

The drawn result pushed Kilcoy and Beerwah to 18 competition points; six behind the fourth-placed Mary Valley which went down 18-6 to the second-placed Caloundra.

Yowies coach Anthony Longbottom said his players became frustrated during last Saturday’s contest, as they were bewildered by a number of refereeing decisions.

Beerwah was awarded a scrum feed a couple of times when Kilcoy expected to have the feed, and a few penalties against the Yowies left the players scratching their heads as well.

One of Beerwah’s tries also generated disapproval among the Yowies after a Bulldogs player crossed the sideline in the lead-up.

Longbottom said the result could have gone either way, and that the Yowies did well considering they were “under the pump”.

“You could see the determination,” he said.

With a bye this weekend, the Yowies are looking forward to their next fixture on July 8.
